Mukho Memories
Don Haffner was a Peace Corps Volunteer in South Korea from 1972 through 1975. He taught ESL (English as a Second Language) to first-year middle school students in the town of Mukho, Gangwon Province. In the summer of 1975, Don also served as a Volunteer TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) Instructor for the K-35 (Peace Corps/Korea’s 35th) training program.
Mukho Memories is the humorous and entertaining story of Don Haffner’s Peace Corps Service.
Peace Corps/Korea
Peace Corps volunteers served in the Republic of Korea (South Korea) from 1966 through 1981. The majority of volunteers who served in Korea during this fifteen-year period taught English as a Second Language. Others served in various health programs. By 1981 South Korea was rapidly developing into the modern capitalist and democratic nation that it is today, and Peace Corps ended all its programs in the country.

Don Haffner's account is a well-written & very enjoyable journey/narration back into his past as a Peace Corps Volunteer, and then Korean/English language worker with commentary on his post-Korea life. For the returned peace corps volunteer readers, his narration of staging, the harsh reality of being thrown into a foreign culture with the associated cross-cultural conflicts, and the life-long friendships with his fellow volunteers will bring back good & bad memories of their own peace corps time/service. Don stands as a sterling example of a peace corps volunteer that President Kennedy and Sargeant Shriver worked for. The photos are a good addition and the reader should be grateful that the publisher included them even with the additional cost. A good volume on Korean culture and history although a little more narration on the Korean War and why the US Army is still stationed in South Korea would be helpful especially considering the hostile situation now with a dangerous north korean despot armed with nuclear weapons and having just murdered an USA citizen. Fair editorial comment that I'm not an unbiased reviewer: I went to Albion College with Don where we were on the soccer team together our freshman year, we were history majors together (and took some education courses), and I too, was a peace corps volunteer although I did not have nearly as good a peace corps experience as Don did. I too found peace corps to have shaped my post peace corps life and led to my former career as a Department of Defense training support contractor for the US Navy. Don's book is a must-buy for those interested in the Peace Corps, and Korea.Product details

Mukho Memories A Peace Corps/Korea Memoir Don Haffner 9781457553844 Books Reviews
" for peace corp folks or folks that spent time in S.K. post the Korean war , Mr.Haffner's memoir could prove an interesting history and first hand
description of the culture and mood the times ,though sitting precariously against the unpredictable North , S.K has evolved into one of the most vital economies economies in the world"
A heartfelt memoir of what it meant to be a Peace Corp volunteer so far from home. Don Haffner devoted his young life to teaching English to middle school children in South Korea. He also immersed himself in the language and culture of this beautiful country, and made lifelong friends in the process. With inciteful clarity, humor, and much song, too, he relates his experiences in such a down-to-earth manner that you feel like you are right there with him. A very enjoyable read!
